Abstract

Positioned in debates around a dual profiling of globally competent teachers (GCTs) in ‘humanistic’ and ‘neoliberal’ narratives, this study explores how local preservice teachers in Hong Kong profile GCTs and how they envision their possible professional self as GCTs in their future career. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 18 PSTs, the paper argues that PSTs’ profiling and visions transcend the binary narratives of ‘humanistic versus neoliberal’ professional identities, as the participants profile GSTs and envision themselves as GSTs as teachers with global, national, and local knowledge and perspectives, interculturally competent, inclusive teachers, and ‘competitive’ teachers with hard and soft skills. These findings also show that PSTs’ profiling and visions are constructed upon the interconnectedness of the global-national-local knowledge and perspectives.
