Abstract

Lack of reading interest is a common educational challenge among Colombian adult English learners, hindering student competence and success in the foreign language. Following the Four-Phase Model of Interest Development (Hidi & Renninger, 2006), this study presented a pedagogical strategy using visual narratives (picture books and artworks) to foster reading engagement. The intervention goal was to spark situational interest and build sustained reading motivation. Six adult learners participated in nine workshops incorporating image-based storytelling, reflective discussion, and guided reading. Findings suggest that visual narratives work as emotional and cognitive scaffolds, helping learners overcome vocabulary anxiety and reading avoidance. The strategy highlights reading as a meaningful, student-centered act. This work offers insights into how visual narrative pedagogy can transform adult EFL reading practices.
