Abstract

This study examines volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement (VSLCE) practices through a national survey of U.S. public community colleges yielding 214 responses representing 22% of all colleges. The study used Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Cluster Analysis to explore the research question; What are the common dimensions of volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement practices across U.S. community colleges? The analysis revealed five factors and a typology of three clusters of community colleges: Minimalist, Infrastructure Rich, and Policy-Focused showcasing broad application of the college’s civic mission. Recommendations are given for college leaders to collaborate through 2- and 4-year college research studies.
