Abstract

Math anxiety affects math achievement, as do other factors such as parent involvement in math learning and academic self-concept. This study explored how these factors impact high school math achievement. Seventy-six 9th and 10th graders from NY reported math anxiety, academic self-concept (ACS), parent involvement in math learning, current math GPA, and Algebra 1 Regents Exam scores. Regression analyses were conducted to determine the influence of each variable on math achievement. Findings showed neither math anxiety nor academic self-concept impacted Algebra 1 scores. However, parent involvement negatively impacted Algebra 1 scores, while academic self-concept positively impacted them. Math anxiety impacted current math GPA across all models, but not ACS and parent involvement.
