Abstract

Research shows that summer breaks cause declines in academic performance, especially in math (Cooper et al., 1996). While traditional in-person interventions like tutoring and summer programs effectively mitigate summer learning loss, evidence on online learning tools remains limited despite their scalability and accessibility. This study analyzed data from nearly 50,000 students across 10 states who used IXL Math during summer 2024 and found that online learning helps combat summer learning loss. Greater IXL Math usage was linked to better math performance. Schools, educators, and policymakers should consider integrating such platforms as supplemental summer resources. These findings are especially important for addressing learning gaps that often widen during breaks, particularly among students at risk of falling behind.
