Many teacher education programs support preservice teachers (PSTs) in their development of equity-oriented pedagogy, yet educators face oppressive policy contexts that marginalize diverse learners. This paper explores how preservice teachers (PSTs) of Color use writing in literacy methods courses to resist patterns of assimilation and erasure as they reimagine literacy classrooms as agentive spaces through their future practice. Drawing from anti-oppressive education, the authors share how discomfort can be a generative space for revealing how classrooms enact language erasure and impose assimilation norms. When viewed through a taken-for-granted lens, PSTs of Color are provided opportunities to restory their experiences and imagine linguistic justice in community.
