Envisioning Joyful Learning Futures: Inspiration from Caregiver Narratives

Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Positive epistemic emotions, such as joy and curiosity, can foster cognitive, social, and emotional growth. We explore joyful learning as a resource of inspiration for the future of educational research. Our nation-wide study through an in-situ/mobile-based research platform called Dscout generated 100 videos and photographs of parents and other caregivers noticing joyful learning in their children’s activities. Qualitative coding and grounded analysis yielded 12-codes about the dynamics of joyful learning described by caregivers, reported here under three major themes labeled collective engagement, visible interest, and future-oriented. Using an ecological view of emotions, we found joyful learning as emergent, co-produced social experiences rooted in prior practices and involving boundary-crossing, resource-mediated activities.
