Abstract

The Cultural Humility in Assessment (CHIA) Exam Development Board, launched by the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA), is a pioneering initiative that embeds equity-focused review and bias mitigation into national standardized exam development. Grounded in cultural humility and transformative learning theory, CHIA trains reviewers to identify and revise assessment items that may perpetuate stereotypes or exclude diverse patient identities. Integrated across PAEA's assessment portfolio, CHIA reviewed over 3,000 items between 2023-2025, addressing language bias, representation, and clinical relevance related to culture, race, gender identity, and social determinants of health. By transforming assessment into a tool for justice and professional excellence, CHIA offers a scalable, systems-based model for equitable assessment across health professions education.
