Unforgetting Histories: Narrative Inquiry on Encounters with the Amazonian Territory in Brazil

Sat, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 306B

Abstract

We propose to unfold the learning process that emerged in our encounters with the Amazonian territory in Brazil, and the community-based project Guardiões Ambientais Ribeirinhos. Using narrative inquiry methodology, we analyze relations, places, and temporalities in our personal experiences to discuss colonialist relations at the center of the environmental crisis. We are interested in understanding how we learn about environmental justice in a territory where socio-environmental conflicts are at their peak. This research is not an attempt to impose uniformity on how we come to be environmentally sensitive, but rather to treat narrative as a means of being with others, seeking meanings that may help us cope with our circumstances.
