A Conversation on the Emerging Phenomenon of Post-Doctoral Graduation Blues

Sat, April 11, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This conversation centers on the phenomenon of postdoctoral blues, characterized by feelings of aimlessness, loss, let down, emptiness, sadness, and even depression and anxiety after a long, focused effort of achieving a life goal and reaching the perceived pinnacle of success - doctoral degree attainment. In this discussion, we share the limited existing research on the phenomenon, followed by themes generated from autoethnographic reflection from doctoral faculty (N = 2) and analysis of personal vignettes, journal responses, and recent doctoral degree recipients (N = 5) from PhD and EdD programs in the United States. Findings center on factors contributing to the postdoctoral blues, followed by recommendations for preparing for and proactively responding to the phenomenon when it occurs.
