Abstract

This qualitative study explores the experiences of Black men in doctoral counselor education programs, centering their motivations and experiences. Using BlackCrit, the study draws on interviews with 10 current and former doctoral counselor education students. Findings highlight two key strands: (1) participants’ desire to challenge systemic racism in counselor education and “sit at the table” as change agents, and (2) their navigation of anti-Black experiences in white academic spaces. The study offers implications for faculty, program leaders, and postsecondary institutions seeking to foster more equitable, culturally responsive environments for Black men in doctoral counselor education programs.
