“You’re Grounded!”: Multi-Methods Exploration of International Medical Learners in U.S. Medical Centers Using Informed Photography

Sat, April 11, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, Floor: 5th Floor, Hancock Park West

Abstract

Informed Photography (IP) is an innovative qualitative method as part of a multi-methods research design exploring international medical learner experiences in U.S. Academic Medical Centers. A modified blend of Photovoice and Photo Elicitation techniques, IP is an individualized approach to visual data collection and analysis complementing a study guided by Constructivist Grounded Theory. Through an eclectic blend of virtual data collection methods including traditional semi-structured interviews with a structured interview protocol and participant-led digital photography, I used IP to develop individualized photo fieldwork questions, thus creating an informed approach. This research provides a unique platform to explore the assets, strengths, knowledge contributions and challenges of an often forgotten group of future physicians by providing windows into their worlds.
