Abstract

The increasing partisan divide surrounding perspectives on higher education highlights a concerning lack of confidence in U.S. institutions. These deep-rooted divisions are linked to systematic attacks on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are being pursued through national and state efforts. Such actions threaten to undermine the democratic foundations upon which educational institutions are built. Using a critical narrative approach, I documented the experiences of 31 diversity professionals regarding how these assaults on diversity, equity, and inclusion principles alter institutional values and the democratization of knowledge and escalate political polarization, demonstrating varied public opinion about higher education. Implications of this research reaffirm the value of higher education and highlight the democratic divide among higher education leaders.
