Is It Really Important to Study?: Concerning Education’s Role in the Palestine Solidarity Movement

Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between political education and direct action within Global North-based and predominately white organizations in the Palestine Solidarity Movement. The commonsense relationship between study and struggle is brought into question. Using autoethnographic methods to conceptually explore political education within one anti-imperialist and anti-Zionist Jewish organization, I critically engage some of the key tenets of anti-Zionist education such as “unlearning” (Kroll-Zeldin, 2024). In questioning the relationship between political education and direct action, I explore education’s possibilities and limitations within liberation movements.
