Abstract

The Model of Wholeness in Graduate Advising (MWGA) connects “degrees of care” employed in faculty advising relationships with student’s perceptions of the quality of the relationship (Burt et al. 2021). This study explores the advising experiences of 17 Latine doctoral students at R-1 Historically Predominantly White Institutions using this MWGA framework. We analyze how students experienced varying levels of advisor care and examine the model’s applicability to Latine students, a group beyond those originally studied. Findings confirm the model’s applicability and extend it by revealing the reciprocal nature of advising, as students also described offering care to their advisors. This study contributes to refining the MWGA framework and informs a more inclusive and relational understanding of graduate advising.
