Shifting the Narrative in MOOC Research: Insights from Volunteer Evaluators Using a Learning Analytics Approach

Wed, April 8, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Here, we complement the mainstream narrative in MOOC studies by emphasizing sustaining factors instead of dropout reasons. Using Kmeans clustering of navigational sequences and course evaluation content analyses, we identified distinct engagement patterns among students and a nuanced understanding of course engagement. Cluster 1 exhibited high engagement, with volunteer course evaluators forming a subset. These evaluators showed targeted interactions, consistent engagement, and emphasized values on practical tools and structured content. The findings provide insights into effective course design, emphasizing clear objectives, well-organized content, and the critical role of intrinsic motivation in sustaining engagement. This study highlights the importance of understanding diverse student behaviors to enhance MOOC engagement, particularly the unique characteristics of volunteer course evaluators within a highly engaged cluster.
