Abstract

This study explores how H5P-designed interactive learning materials enhance Chinese college students’ engagement in second language learning through the lens of Self-Determination Theory. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyzed questionnaire data (n = 179) and interviews (n = 5) to examine the relationship between basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness) and multidimensional engagement (behavioral, emotional, cognitive). Results revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.685, p <.001) between need satisfaction and engagement, with H5P’s interactive features (e.g., instant feedback, gamification) uniquely fostering autonomy and reducing anxiety. Findings highlight H5P’s advantages over traditional materials in personalization and multimodal support, offering practical insights for technology-enhanced language pedagogy.
