Abstract

Research shows that knowledge regarding students' postsecondary experience influence students´ level of satisfaction and academic success and that knowledge about higher education tends to vary according to family and school socioeconomic level. This research investigates the Higher Education Knowledge students from the university and vocational track in Chile exhibit and its relationship to higher education enrollment and persistence. We used data from a specially designed questionnaire, Item Response and hierarchical regression models. Almost 30% of the students attending secondary education in Chile enroll in the vocational track, and 60% of them belong to the lowest two income quintiles. Results highlight the negative consequences of tracking in students´ higher education knowledge level and in higher education outcomes.
