This study investigates the impact of Socratic Mind, a generative AI (GenAI)-powered assessment tool, on student academic performance and higher-order thinking skills in a large undergraduate computer science course. Leveraging adaptive Socratic dialogue and personalized feedback, the tool aims to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, self-reflection, and verbal communication. Using a mixed-methods design, the study draws on performance data and student reflections to evaluate the tool’s effectiveness as a learning aid. Results show that greater engagement with the GenAI tool is significantly associated with improved final course outcomes and perceived growth in problem-solving and critical thinking skills. These findings highlight the potential of scalable, GenAI-enhanced learning aids to support personalized instruction and foster deeper learning in higher education contexts.
