Abstract

Poetic Inquiry is a qualitative methodology that integrates academic research with original poetry. It highlights the importance of individual expression, and generally involves poetic truth-seeking and poetical examination of inner and outer experience. It reintroduces the thousand-year-long scholarly activity, namely writing poetry, into the academic field. This paper reveals the connection between modern Poetic Inquiry and ancient Chinese literary history, specifically the Wei and Jin dynasties. It discusses four poetic inquirers during this period, namely Lu Ji, Liu Xie, Zhong Rong, and Tao Yuanming, focusing on their biographies, historical records, and writings. The article encourages connecting Poetic Inquiry with other civilizations and academic disciplines.
