Abstract

Poetic Inquiry is a qualitative methodology that integrates academic research with original poetry. It emphasizes individual expression and often involves poetic exploration of truth as well as the poetic examination of inner and outer experience. In doing so, it brings the longstanding scholarly practice of writing poetry back into contemporary academic inquiry. This paper explores the connection between modern Poetic Inquiry and ancient Chinese literary history, particularly during the Wei, Jin, and the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It examines four poetic inquirers from this period, namely Lu Ji, Liu Xie, Zhong Rong, and Tao Yuanming. The discussion focuses on their biographies, historical records, and writings. The article ultimately seeks to broaden the scope of Poetic Inquiry by encouraging dialogue between this methodology and other civilizations and academic traditions.
