Trends & Gaps in the Middle: A Content Analysis of MLER Research Agenda Literature Reviews

Abstract

In 2022 middle level researchers from across the globe engaged in a multi-stage project that led to an updated research agenda for middle level researchers and culminated in the publication of 13 literature reviews on topics from the MLER Research Agenda. As researchers, we were curious about what these reviews revealed about the field of middle level education research. What trends were evident across topics? What gaps remain? Through qualitative content analysis, we identified recurring trends and gaps across the reviews. This presentation shares our findings and reflects on how the current landscape of middle level research might inform future scholarship, teacher preparation, and advocacy efforts in support of young adolescent learners.
