Abstract

This mixed-methods study integrated network analysis and thematic analysis to examine how maternal overprotection relates to controlling feeding practices and preschoolers’ eating behaviors. Quantitative data from 2,018 mothers identified key behavioral patterns and bridge nodes linking overprotective parenting to mealtime dynamics. Semi-structured interviews with mothers, preschoolers, and early childhood teachers offered contextualized insights into underlying motivations. Findings reveal how overprotective behaviors beyond mealtimes spill into feeding interactions, shaping children’s eating patterns. The study underscores the importance of addressing broader parenting styles in early health interventions. Methodologically, it demonstrates the utility of combining network modeling with qualitative inquiry to illuminate complex caregiver–child dynamics in early childhood research.
