Abstract

Chinese academics returning from abroad with advanced degrees often face significant challenges reintegrating into academic and professional life in China. However, they frequently encounter significant challenges during the process of re-adaptation. This study, based on the qualitative data collected from 11 returnee academics, analyzes the factors influencing their re-adaptation at various levels in “Double First-Class” universities in China. The findings reveal that environmental, organizational, and personal factors all impact the re-adaptation capabilities of returnee teachers. Additionally, diverse academic backgrounds, pre-abroad identities, and the amount of time spent overseas present distinct challenges during this transition. Based on these insights, this study proposes feasible recommendations for the adaptation of returnee teachers from multiple levels, including the national, university, and individual levels.
