Abstract

Civil engineering (CE) education is critical for preparing the future engineering workforce, yet college CE students face various challenges. Little is known about the effects of existing interventions in addressing students’ challenges. Using a systematic review, this study examines the literature on CE students’ challenges and evaluates the effectiveness of interventions. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched and reviewed 75 peer-reviewed articles on CE education published from 2014 to 2024, and identified four essential challenges and five types of interventions. Intervention effectiveness and research quality were evaluated to provide implications for researchers, college CE educators, and policymakers.
