Evolving Approaches to Mathematics Specialist Research: Reviewing Designs to Guide Future Educational Reform

Abstract

Mathematics specialists are increasingly relied on by many school systems to improve mathematics teaching and learning. However, despite their growing presence, research lacks a clear understanding of how mathematics specialist roles are studied. Hence, the overarching purpose of this systematic literature review is to synthesize the various research framings, methodological approaches, and research questions used in mathematics specialist research design. To conduct this systematic literature review, we drew upon the comprehensive review steps outlined by Cooper and colleagues (2019), and our data corpus features 80 mathematics specialist research articles. Ultimately, this study offers implications for other researchers who wish to advance mathematics specialist research.
