International Graduate Students' Experiences with DEI Programs at a U.S. University: A Study on Their Social Communication

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 303B

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive phenomenological study explored how international graduate students adapted to academic and cultural life at a southeastern U.S. university, focusing on their experiences with DEI programs. Using Kim’s (2001) cross-cultural adaptation theory, the study emphasized the importance of social connections and understanding the host environment. Participants from various countries shared that support from faculty, staff, and peers helped ease their transition. The study recommends updating DEI programs to meet current needs, involving experienced students in mentoring roles, and exploring how DEI efforts and faculty mentoring impact long-term student success
