Abstract

This study explores how immersive technologies and narrative-based strategies support embodied engagement and enhance presence in designing immersive learning experiences (ILX) for informal educational settings. Grounded in embodied cognition theory, we analyze three student-designed projects using AR, VR, and AI-powered smart glasses for a science centre in Western Canada. Using a case study approach incorporating artefact and visual narrative analysis, we explored student-designed artefacts, process documents, and semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that integrating immersive technologies with narrative-based strategies can effectively promote bodily engagement and users’ sense of presence. Incorporating narrative with embodied engagement transforms passive observation into active participation that facilitates learning. This research shows how embodiment and narrative enrich informal learning by making it more engaging, multisensory, and participatory.
