Abstract

This study examines parental engagement in closed Facebook groups used during a family STEM program for early childhood across three urban schools. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach grounded in the Ecologies of Parental Engagement model, we analyzed online survey data and parent interviews to understand expressions of engagement in this online space. Results revealed that parents most valued the sense of community, opportunities for collaboration, and sharing ideas. The Facebook group served as a dynamic space for modeling STEM learning, fostering inspiration, and showcasing children's achievements. These findings highlight how social media can serve as an informal learning environment that supports family engagement, fosters parental relationships, promotes family-child collaboration, and encourages early STEM learning.
