This study examines how top-tier education journals and major publishers are responding to the rise of generative AI through policies on authorship, peer review, and image use in academic journals. We conducted a descriptive analysis of top journals’ GenAI policies and a content analysis of the five leading publishers. Our findings reveal wide variation in transparency, with many journals lacking explicit guidance on AI use. This absence raises critical questions about authorship, agency, and academic integrity in an AI-mediated research landscape. We follow with recommendations for the field.
