Abstract

This study explores how community sexual health educators in rural, conservative Utah navigate and disrupt cultural norms to deliver sex education. Using culturally sustaining pedagogy and a culturally disruptive framework, we analyze interviews with three Utah community sexual health educators. Thematic analysis revealed three key strategies including using intentional language, building community, and fostering safe environments. These approaches allow educators to offer culturally disruptive instruction while challenging stigmas and restrictions. This study highlights the complex, context-driven work educators do to uphold students’ rights to accurate, affirming sexual health education.
