Abstract

Return migrant students (RMS) in Mexico have generated a growing interest in academic research. This article conducted a systematic review examining the literature of articles, theses and book chapters published between 2009 and 2025; using the PRISMA guidelines. The information was collected through different databases. The search terms were: return migrants, barriers, support, higher education and Mexico. A total of 637 articles were identified; however, only 74 studies were selected for review. The objective of the study was to identify what the literature says about the challenges, opportunities and strategies faced by RMS in their access to and permanence in Mexican higher education. The results identify language barriers, sociocultural adaptation challenges, the importance of bilingualism and family support networks.
