Abstract

This study explores the educational potential of commercially available, history-based video games as immersive learning platforms. Rather than focusing solely on educational games, it examines how popular entertainment titles can engage players in historical inquiry, promote critical thinking, and deepen understanding of the past. Using the game design plot framework and digital ethnography, the study analyzes over 450 user-generated comments. Findings identify six key educational outcomes, demonstrating that commercial video games can support active participation and collaborative knowledge construction in history education. The paper highlights the importance of integrating immersive games into formal curricula and emphasizes the need for thoughtful pedagogical strategies and professional development to maximize their educational impact.
