Abstract

Community-based education is a broad term for a range of educational experiences that create opportunities for future educators to better understand how to support the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse youth while addressing potential deficit views that future educators might have of diverse communities. This paper explores the design and implementation of an undergraduate community-based education course taught in a culturally diverse community including some of the opportunities and challenges of community-based education. The paper also highlights how the students taking the course made meaning of the community including shifts in deficit thinking about the community and the development of community specific cultural competence.
