In preservice teacher education, students create lesson plans to learn how to align their content knowledge with sound pedagogy. The ability of generative AI tools to create lesson plans necessitates evaluating the integration of these assignments in preservice coursework. This mixed methods study examined the pedagogical components of AI generated lesson plans, student annotations on AI lesson plans, and student reflections on generating AI lesson plans from two semesters of graduate certification students (n=22) enrolled in a literacy course. These preservice content experts focused primarily on the pedagogical aspects of the lesson plans, highlighting the importance of developing preservice teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and application of pedagogical knowledge to the appraisal and remixing of AI generated lesson plans.
