Constrained Inclusion Within Campus Environments: The Experiences of Undocumented College Students in California and Texas

Sun, April 12, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 303A

Abstract

Research shows that even in states where undocumented students can by law pay in-state resident tuition rates, they experience limitations as it relates to their college access and persistence due to numerous state and campus policies and practices, as well as through their relationships with institutional agents. However, it is less clear how else the campus environment is exacerbating feelings of restriction among undocumented students as they persist in college. Guided by Negrón-Gonzales’ (2017) constrained inclusion lens and Strange and Banning’s (2015) four critical aspects of thew campus environment in college, we seek to answer this research question: In what ways are undocumented students in California and Texas experiencing constrained inclusion within the campus environment as they persist in college?
