Abstract

While words like diversity, race, inclusion, equity and many more are under attack, it is critical that preservice teachers prioritize culture. This teacher preparation program is committed to preparing culturally competent teachers for urban contexts. This study highlights the process of preparation with nine preservice teachers enrolled in a Reading methods course during their senior year in a teacher preparation program at an urban HBCU. Through focused reflections, one-on-one and small group interviews, in addition to lesson plans, preservice teachers share their perspectives and experiences on the importance of culture in education and how this will show up in their classrooms.
