Abstract

The objective of the study is to understand how counselors in varying school locales allocate their work hours across a range of service areas. Understanding these patterns is critical to identifying potential disparities in student access to essential comprehensive developmental support in school. This study utilized public-use data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. A series of separate ordered logistic regression models were estimated. Counselor time use varied significantly by school locale, region, school type, and student characteristics. Suburban counselors were more likely to spend time on scheduling, college readiness, career planning, and other counseling duties than those in city schools, while rural and town counselors also reported more time on career planning, job skills, and academic testing.
