Abstract

The Human-AI Symbiotic Theory (HAIST), a comprehensive, multi-paradigm framework for authentic collaboration between human researchers and artificial intelligence (AI) systems in academic research. HAIST is developed through the integration of five theoretical domains, learning theory, cognition, information processing, ethics, and AI studies, into seven actionable principles that guide human-AI partnership. Using a sequential three-phase mixed-methods design, the theory is evaluated via a novel validation protocol: combining multi-framework human expert assessment with AI-assisted content analysis by three large language models (LLMs). Results reveal high theoretical rigor (85% criteria met) and unprecedented convergence between human and AI ratings (ICC=0.83, α=0.82). HAIST and its AI-assisted validation protocol represent a replicable pathway for advancing theory and methodological rigor as generative AI transforms educational research.
