Holistic and Transformational Learning in Medical School: Seeking an Integrated Professional Identity

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

Medical students experience a multifaceted process of Professional Identity Formation (PIF) which is a critical process where learners internalize the beliefs, values, and behaviors of the medical profession, enabling them to think, act, and feel like physicians. PIF is influenced by socialization, experiential learning, mentorship, and reflective practices that allow students to reconcile their personal identities with emerging professional roles. Holistic education plays a vital role in this process by addressing acquisition of medical knowledge, clinical skills, and also the emotional, ethical, psychosocial, and spiritual dimensions of medical practice. By integrating diverse learning experiences—such as clinical encounters, patient interactions, simulation exercises, and reflective writing—holistic education fosters empathy, compassion, resilience, and ethical awareness; essential attributes of a professional physician.
