A Critical Historical Analysis of Latina/o/x Activism and Response by the Campus Community

Wed, April 8, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

When a Latinx student organization presented a proposal to the student government council to fund their Parents Weekend event, the White student senators’ racist responses sparked a protest campaign that united students of color at Indiana University during the 1990s. This historical accounting applies White Institutional Presence as an analytic tool to reveal the embedded institutional racism in campus policies and social norms, as well as the maintenance of white comfort.
