Abstract

This paper presents a concrete framework for building integrative capacity in a mixed methods (MM) research study during the design phase. Integration is the hallmark analytical process that differentiates MM research from well-established traditions: quantitative research (QUAN) and qualitative research (QUAL). Novice MM researchers often find it difficult to plan for integration. Plausible reasons for this include entrained attachment to a siloed research paradigm or unexamined preconceptions about what it means to design. We propose a framework for crosswalking data collection tools for helping MM novices transition from aspiring to integrate to designing for integration. Written from the perspective of a mentor and instructor, this presentation will be of interest to self-learning MM researchers and anyone teaching MM research courses.
