Artist-Educator Identity: Critical Formation and Visual Narrative in Preservice Art Teachers

Abstract

This qualitative multiple case study examines how preservice art educators develop their artist-educator identity during teacher preparation, addressing critical gaps in understanding this complex integration process. Through semi-structured interviews and arts-based inquiry involving self-created reflective portraits, the investigation reveals four interconnected themes: identity positioning through artistic media exploration, discovery and reconciliation of dual roles, positioning personal identity within professional spaces, and visual narratives of identity discovery. Findings illuminate how identity development involves continuous positioning, discovery, and reconciliation rather than linear progression. This research contributes essential insights for preparing transformative art educators who can authentically integrate artistic practice with pedagogical responsibility while serving diverse student populations in contemporary educational contexts.
