Abstract

This study investigated the impact of persona-based ChatGPT on Korean learners’ argumentative writing, tolerant attitudes, and engagement. Fifty-three participants were divided into an experimental group (persona-based ChatGPT) and a control group (general ChatGPT). Both groups improved in argumentative writing and open attitudes, but not in empathetic attitudes. The experimental group showed significantly higher engagement (t = 2.015, p = .049) and more creative, divergent argumentation patterns than control group through epistemic network analysis. Interviews highlighted enhanced perspective-taking and emotional engagement, though overly rigid personas limited empathy. Findings suggest persona-based ChatGPT supports cognitive and affective learning, with implications for improving persona design to foster empathy.
