Abstract

In the GenAI era, promoting Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) supports educational equity by empowering students to become independent learners. Educators play a key role in promoting SRL, therefore teacher education must prepare future teachers to foster these skills. This study examined 37 diverse pre-service teachers, primarily women of mixed ethnic identities, through the analysis of GenAI-enhanced lesson plans. A framework was developed to assess the presence and explicitness of SRL strategies, positioning lesson plans as a promising evaluation tool. Findings indicate that while pre-service teachers value SRL, they often need support to apply it explicitly to foster students’ autonomy and to effectively assess their SRL development. These insights may enhance teacher education programs by bolstering SRL among pre-service teachers and students.
