Fri, April 10, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

This basic interpretive qualitative study explored the reasons for mathematics success among Black college women at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). The research, guided by an intersectional framework including Black feminism and Critical Race Theory, sought to examine the familial, social, and institutional factors contributing to their achievement. Using semi-structured interviews and photovoice with eight successful Black college women, the study identified six key themes. Findings highlight the foundational role of community support networks, the importance of internal resilience and self-advocacy, and the strategies used to navigate institutional barriers. This asset-based research provides actionable insights for fostering more equitable and supportive educational environments for underrepresented college populations.
