Abstract

Conventional approaches to foreign language (FL) instruction often fall short in fostering authentic and fluid intercultural exchange between learners of different nations. In critical response, this self-study of an exchange initiative between Azerbaijani (AFL) and English (EFL) students proposes a “blended translanguaging” model for fostering dynamic exchanges in the Azerbaijani higher education context. We explore how generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can be used to support intercultural communicative exchange and develop global citizenry. Data sources include student work surveys (pre and post), collaborative-written student work samples, curricular materials, teacher journal, and teacher reflections. Findings illuminate AI’s benefits in generating culturally diverse scenarios and its limitations in enacting critical cultural interpretations. Study implications illustrate pathways for language teacher development of AI literacies.
