Black Male Black-Male-Centered Counter-spaces: Utilizing Abolitionist Teaching & Black Trans Feminist to Disrupt Patriarchal Norms

Thu, April 9, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

Numerous studies have documented how Black students at PWIs have utilized counterspaces to develop a stronger sense of belonging to their campus (Solorzano et. al, 2000; Brooms et. al, 2021). Underexplored is the role that such spaces may play in enabling Black males to develop a stronger sense of belonging at their PWIs in response to the barriers created by anti-blackness and patriarchal masculine norms. The purpose of this study is to explore how participation in a Black-male-centered educational space enabled Black Males to resist anti-blackness and patriarchal masculine norms to develop a stronger sense of belonging.
