This study investigates how EdD students in CPED-member programs engage with Critical Race Theory (CRT) and applied research methodologies to address problems of practice and lead for equity. Using abstract analysis and interviews with four graduates, we explore how CRT is taught, supported, and operationalized in dissertations and professional practice. Findings highlight inconsistencies in CRT instruction and mentoring, challenges in methodological preparation, and difficulties translating dissertation learning into practice. We argue that despite equity-centered rhetoric, EdD programs may lack the coherence and supports necessary to prepare leaders for equity-focused change. This study contributes to reimagining EdD preparation by advocating for explicit CRT integration and applied inquiry models that bridge doctoral learning and professional leadership.
