Abstract

Well-being in higher education can take different forms and have distinct meanings. Oftentimes, minority students and faculty adopt acts of resilience that help them strive and overcome obstacles (Campa, 2017), in particular in STEM fields. This study has a qualitative research approach focusing on Latinx STEM students and faculty acts of resilience through mentoring at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Qualitative findings showed the benefits of mentoring in improving students’ and mentors’ well-being. Students perceived mentors as allies, able to support their academic and professional aspirations. Mentors were convinced of their important role and found a safe place to share their struggles and vulnerabilities. This study continues to show the importance of a community that helps minority students and scholars thrive.
