Feedback‐Driven Strategic Shifts in Immersive Virtual Reality Training: A Multi-Phase Behavioral-Mining Study

Abstract

This study investigates the immediate impact of instructional feedback embedded in immersive virtual reality (IVR) training using second-by-second logs from 27 civil engineering undergraduates in a heat-stress safety simulation. We analyzed how feedback rapidly alters behaviors, identified distinct learner response profiles, and derived timing principles for adaptive in-VR feedback. Findings indicate that within 60 seconds of feedback, study participants reduced exploratory behaviors and increased task-focused transitions, with strategic entropy indicating effective adaptation. K-Means clustering identified three groups as follows: Fast Switchers, Explorers, and Stuck Learners. These results highlight varied feedback responsiveness. Personalized, timed feedback during behavioral restructuring advances SRL theory in high-stakes VR, informing intelligent, adaptive VR training system design.
